France is a small country, nearly the size of Texas, yet manages to encompass a very rich geographical diversity. From high a top the snowy Mont Blanc, to the marsh lands of the Camargue, to the rocky, Atlantic-beaten islands of the West, and to the rolling countryside of the North, France has the stunning, natural beauty for the nature-lover in all of us. Despite the 63 million people who inhabit the small country, the French have done an unbelievable job of keeping the land “sauvage” or wild, and have gone to great lengths to preserve forests, lakes, canyons, plains, outcrops so that they can be enjoyed for their natural beauty. Aside from the preservation of its land, the French have struggled to preserve their culture as well. One might think of the French as a proud Nation, as they most certainly are, but it is this pride that has enabled them to keep those wonderful traditions alive that they have been using for centuries, despite the urge to become globalized. Language, the arts, agriculture, government, education, and cuisine are all very methodical and all employ age-old traditions that are automatically wired into their daily habits of living and survival. For example, the way a wine maker pours wine from a barrel into a bottle using natural gravity, and not a machine; the way the a baker makes his bread fresh and by hand everyday without any other ingredients aside from flour, eggs, water, salt and yeast; the way families still keep Sundays entirely for time together at one table instead of for working or cutting the lawn. Tradition and the importance of cultural heritage are a thing of the past in many countries, but is very much a live and well in France and waiting to be shared with you…the traveller. If sharing the tradition of a game of boules with the locals, or learning the age-old methods of making non-pasteurized cheese are not enough culture to get you on a plane, then certainly the immense amount of history that permeates the country will have you in awe, as France has incredible historic remnants from every era of all of human history. The pre-historic caves drawings, the stone hut-like bories of our first centuries, uncovered Greek cities, enormous Roman aquaducts and amphitheatres, dramatic gothic churches….and one could go on and on as in every corner, in even the tiniest villages, history has been valued, appreciated and preserved so that it can be shared with future generations. So whether you wish to visit France by balloon or bicycle, this tiny country has something for everyone to see and do.
