The top destinations in South Africa are:

Kruger National Park

The world-renowned Kruger National Park, which sprawls across nearly 20,000 sq kilometres of hot, flattish lowveld terrain in the far northeast of South Africa, ranks among the finest game sanctuaries in the world. Few visitors come away disappointed. The sky is big, the horizons are far and the great expanses of bushveld remain remarkably unspoilt. All the roads, rest camps and other man-made features only account for about 2 percent of the park’s area, the rest is pure wilderness. No other sanctuary in Africa can match the Kruger in the number and variety of its life forms: the savannah plains of the park, the forest and riverine reaches are home to nearly 150 kinds of mammal, including the ‘Big 5’ (Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Leopard and Buffalo), more than 500 bird species, 112 reptile types (50 of them snakes of one sort or another), 49 of fish, 34 of amphibian, an uncountable diversity of insects, 500 types of tree and a vast array of shrubs, grasses and bulbous plants.

The Kruger National Park is the same size as Wales and larger than the state of Hawaii. Plans are well under way to make it even bigger, extending its boundaries into neighbouring Zimbabwe and Mozambique in order to create a giant, 35,000 sq kilometre wildlife conservation area to be known as the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park.

There are also a number of luxurious Private Game Reserves that border the Kruger Park and offer a more upmarket experience of game viewing.

Cape Town

Without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in world. The city of Cape Town is wrapped around Table Mountain and offers a number of fantastic sights and activities to do while there. The top attractions in Cape Town are the V&A Waterfront, tours around the South Peninsula (incl Cape Point and the Boulders Penguins) as well as visiting the winelands region of Stellenbosch for some wine tasting. In the flower season (Aug – Oct) trips up the West Coast are a must while from (Sep – Dec) taking a trip out to the town of Hermanus should not be missed. Hermanus is one of the best land based whale watching areas in the world. Great White Shark Cage Diving day trips are also very popular and operate from Cape Town.

Garden Route

The Garden Route is a beautiful stretch of coastline that runs from Mossel Bay through to Port Elizabeth. This route is made up of many small towns that each have something different to offer. Towns along the route include Mosel Bay, George, Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma, Jeffrey’s Bay and Port Elizabeth. It is very worthwhile to spend 4-7 days travelling slowly along this route and taking in all that it has to offer.
